Founded in 1874, Glenglassaugh's history is punctuated by long periods of dosure. It was rebuilt in 1960, but only operated intermittently before being closed again in 1986. After being reopened in 2008, it was bought by Brown-Forman in 2016. From the first nose, this 40-year-old bottling, invites us on a journey to a multitude of uncompounded pasts. Which is why it is impossible to resist the wild charm of a palette of flavours and aromas now stripped of anything superfluous and very naturally presents the various nuances which have, over time, given it an undeniablypoetic dimension.

Colour: deep gold.

Profile: the incredibly complex first nose is exotic (passion fruit, pineapple), spicy (star anise, cumin), vanilla and tertiary (sweet chestnut). Allowed to breathe, its spicy character becomes more powerful (cardamom, turmeric) and heady florals (peony) appear. The accomplished attack is crisp with clearly defined contours. The mid-palate brings out noble characters of cocoa, herbaceous wood and tobacco (Havana cigar). On the finish, black fruits (blackcurrant) and red fruits (strawberry) seize the palate. The delightfully rich retro-nasal olfaction invites us to enjoy a delicious quince jelly.

The whisky was disgorged and bottled under my supervision in the Town of Pitlochry on 12th December 2018.
